Research notes
First federally designated National River in the U.S. (1972). 135 river miles through the Ozarks; ~94,000 ac federal acreage. Watershed extends well beyond the federal boundary into adjacent private agricultural land. The 2013–2019 C&H Hog Farms episode (Mt. Judea, Newton County) drove APC&EC's permanent CAFO moratorium for the BNR watershed under Reg. 6 — this is a hard land-use preemption on hog/poultry operations above a defined animal-unit threshold within the watershed boundary. Pairs with the AR_OZARK_OUACHITA_NF_ADJACENCY overlay where the Ozark NF buffers BNR uplands.
