Research notes
Frac-sand mining is concentrated in the Driftless Area — Trempealeau, Buffalo, Chippewa, Eau Claire, Barron, Jackson, Monroe counties. Local CUP authority survived 2013 efforts to preempt siting; the state floor is reclamation (NR 135) plus WPDES industrial stormwater. Ferrous metallic mining is separately regulated under §§ 295.40–295.79 (Subch. III).
