Quirks & watch-items

Quirks & watch-items
  • WI is statewide-mandatory for commercial (SPS 361-366) AND residential (UDC SPS 320-325), but the residential code is a Wisconsin-only document (NOT the IRC). The state-side definition of "IRC" in admin code text means the UDC.
  • WI uses NFPA 1 (2012) as its statewide fire code — one of the few states that does not adopt the IFC.
  • The 2021 commercial code update took effect Sept 1, 2025; plans submitted before Nov 1, 2025 could still use the prior 2015-edition rules.
  • WI is on a delayed adoption cycle: 2017 NEC (next would be 2023), 2012 NFPA 1.
