Small Room Exceptions allow for fewer outlets to be placed (less than 12×12). Additional exceptions below to consider.

Then the kitchen wiring on top of counter space gets rather exciting. All counter tops need to be within 2 feet of a plug, with that being an effective 4 feet.

Receptacle Placement Edge Cases

Kitchen Countertop

Receptacles placed every 4 feet along the countertop. No point along the countertop can be more than 2 feet from a receptacle.

Long Hallway

Receptacles placed at least every 10 feet in a hallway longer than 10 feet.

Bathroom

Receptacles placed within 3 feet of the sink, GFCI-protected.

Garage

At least one GFCI-protected receptacle per vehicle bay.

Outdoor Spaces

One weatherproof, GFCI-protected receptacle at the front and rear of the house, no more than 6.5 feet above ground.

Bedroom (AFCI)

AFCI protection and standard receptacle spacing along walls.
